I guess you could say I have now gotten into the busy part of the semester. Now with 3 weeks of classes behind me....meaning a lot more reading, and a lot less blogging - unfortunately!
I really am enjoying my classes this semester though. On Thursday afternoon/evening's my class is held at a local elementary school. For this class we were all paired up with a child that is a struggling reader. This has been a huge eye opener for me since I am used to working with young readers, I haven't seen many struggling readers from the older grades (although I know they exist). I am working with a 4th grader who is literally STUCK on a beginning of first grade reading level. First and foremost this absolutely BREAKS MY HEART. The next thought that crosses my mind is, how did this precious child get left so far behind????
When I asked this child if he thought he was a good reader, he immediately responded with a BIG, FAT, NO. {sighhh} All I could do was tell him everything that he HAS to BELIEVE: "YOU ARE A READER, AND YOU ARE A GOOD READER!"
I have been given a huge challenge, a challenge that I am BLESSED to have! I have to give this child the confidence he needs and deserves to be a good reader, and most importantly make him BELIEVE he is a good reader! I mean...think about it , if you don't think you are good at something, would you EVER want to do it???? I wouldn't.
Hopefully by the end of the semester I will have this child WANTING to read, BELIEVING that he CAN, and KNOWING he is GOOD at it :)
Game day tomorrow! Go Gamecocks as they head to Athens tomorrow to get our first (of many) SEC win of the season!
Happy Friday!
